Wodrich Rings in New Year with Win at Bowlway Lanes

Freshly fallen snow and icy conditions didn't stop an energized field of 74 bowlers from participating in the 4th annual Bowlway Lanes New Year's Day No-Tap tournament.

Scores were high this year with Michael Wodrich (Hampshire) winning the title with games of 300, 266 and 252, including 87 pins of handicap for 905 series. Coming in a close second was Joe Armintrout (West Dundee) with a 888 series, followed by Ed Wethington (Poplar Grove) with 875 and Julie Vida (Streamwood) at 872.

"I wasn't sure how the turnout would go today, but everything went really well," said Tournament Director Cindy Walden. "We filled every lane of the house and only had two no-shows."

Total prize fund for the tournament reached almost $2,500. Last place to cash was 7th with a score of 819 for $45. Final standings for the top five bowlers included:

There were three 300 games shot during the tournament: Michael Wodrich (Hampshire), Carmela Rosa, and Mark Toppel (both from Elgin).

Next up at Bowlway Lanes will be the second Elgin Cross-Town Classic on Saturday, March 1st at Elgin Lanes at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 8th at Bowlway Lanes at 1:00 p.m. The tournament will feature challenge matches between the top bowlers from Elgin Lanes and Bowlway Lanes. Last year, Team Bowlway won the tournament by winning five out of six matches.
