The luck of the Irish helped Greg Irish win the first Bowlway Bracket Blast tournament held at Bowlway Lanes. The inaugural event featured a sold out field of bowlers from the Fox Valley area.
After coming from the bottom of the field, Irish claimed four straight victories in match-play competition averaging a modest 190. But perhaps his most important victory came in his first match against fellow Hampshire resident Mike Wodrich, who left a 4-6 split in the 9th frame, opening the door for Irish to claim a 205-199 victory. Irish qualified for the 15th seed position. After beating Wodrich, he squeaked out victories over Bob Read 188-172 and Mark Topple 185-173 to advance to the Championship match where he routed Daryl Rucki Jr. 219-130.
"I saved my best game for the championship," said Irish after the tournament. "I got some breaks along the way and tried to stay clean in all my matches."
The format for the tournament included two games of qualifying. Then bowlers were seeded from the 1st to 16th positions. The next round included single match-game elimination. Bowlers winning matches would advance to the next round. Losers would be eliminated. The field of players averaged 204 in qualifying and 202 in match-play.
The initial success of the Bowlway Bracket Blast means the tournament will be back, according to proprietor Norm Grocke. "This was a great time and competitive," he said. "Each match was exciting to watch and the bowlers seemed to like the format."
The tournament was sponsored by Carmelo's Auto Sales, Bowlway Lanes, bowlelgin.com and madwill creative. The tournament paid eight spots out of 16 bowlers. The final standings for the cashers includes:
