Bowlway Lanes Retains Mayor's Cup; Grinds Out Victory Over Elgin Lanes

It was an about face for the second week of the Elgin Cross-Town Classic.

After the high-scoring pace witnessed at Elgin Lanes last week, where eight out of ten bowlers averaged over 200 for the three game series, only two bowlers emerged this week with big numbers.

The rather focused and intense crowd at Bowlway Lanes got a whole different perspective as each team tried to grind out its way to victory. After the opening frames of the first game, where both teams struggled to throw strikes and make spares, Team Bowlway eventually pulled ahead and capitalized on open frames by Team Elgin, leading to a 194 pin win.

The second match was much closer with solid games from Team Elgin, led by John Mundt with a 221, Brett Golabek 212 and Drew Perly’s 200. But Team Bowlway responded with Sean Hargadon’s 235 game, Dan Olson’s 231 and Wayne Curley finishing with 204. Bowlway won by 14 pins.

With Team Bowlway safely ahead, a late run was needed by Team Elgin to get back into the match. But Wayne Curley’s 257 game helped Bowlway Lanes prevail and win the last game by 36 pins.

“Today was a grind out,” said Bill Killmer from Team Bowlway.  “Strikes were hard to come by and you had to make your spares to stay in the game. Everybody struggled one time or another trying to make the right shots. But that’s what makes team bowling exciting – you’re  in together until the end.”

Team Bowlway took a 16-13 match-point lead and a total pin lead of 11 pins after the first week’s matches at Elgin Lanes. After finishing the matches at Bowlway Lanes, Team Bowlway won the tournament 37-21 in total match-points, building a 255 pin lead.

The match-points system used in many competitive leagues and was adapted for this tournament. One point is awarded to each bowler for each game won against his opponent including total series. Two points is awarded to each team for each game won and three points for total series. If the two teams tie at the end of the event, total pins will be used to determine the winner.

Elgin Mayor David Kaptain once again presented the Mayor’s Cup Trophy to Team Bowlway for its victory. Elgin Today’s Jeff Myers emceed both weeks of the tournament providing scoring updates, introductions, and interviews. When asked about the future of the Elgin Cross-Town Classic, Elgin Lanes General Manager Lex Perly was optimistic. “We have something here between the two bowling centers,” he said. “A lot of hard work is done to make this event a success, and we’ll be back next year.”

Team Bowlway was led by Wayne Curley with a 685 series and Sean Hargadon with 645. The team finished with 3,000 total pins for a team average of 200. Team Elgin was led by John Mundt with a 597 series and Brett Golabek with 588. The team finished with 2,756 total pins for a team average of 183.

The Elgin Cross-Town Classic II was sponsored by Bowlway Lanes, Elgin Lanes, madwill creative, City of Elgin and Mayor Kaptain, Elgin Today and Jeff Myers, Jason Pawlowski Photography, Anderson’s Awards, Allegra Marketing, and tournament certification is provided by the United States Bowling Congress.
