Suburban Windy City Hall of Famer, Bill Killmer, will join this year's Team Bowlway, along with Dan Olson, Nick Miller and John Golden. |
“We’ve picked some new faces this year who bring quite a bit of experience,” Bowlway Lanes co-owner Norm Grocke said. “These bowlers are leaders in their leagues in average and all of them are excellent team players."
Team Bowlway will feature five right-handers and one left-hander as the alternate. Returning from last year's squad are Sean Hargadon, who currently leads the Tuesday Nite Men's League in average. Wayne Curley will return in and leads all players with a 217 average. Both are from Elgin.
Filling out the lineup are veteran bowlers Dan Olson from Streamwood, an eight-time participant in the United States Bowling Championships, and Suburban Windy City Association Hall of Famer Bill Killmer from Bartlett, who's won multiple Chicago and Illinois State Association tournaments. Elgin bowler Nick Miller also joins the starting team this year, bringing some youthful energy. Total average for the five man team is 1050. The alternate is lefty John Golden from Elgin with a 201 average.
“This event reminds me of the type of challenge matches I grew up with in Chicago years ago,” Bill Killmer said. "This is about the integrity of the sport; team against team in a scratch format" added Killmer.
Last year, Team Bowlway won the inaugural event after winning the first five matches and fighting off a late surge from Elgin Lanes.
The Elgin Cross-Town Classic is a throwback to the past. It features challenge matches, a format popular in the 1930’ - 1950’s when bowling centers would form teams of top bowlers to compete against each other.
In Elgin, it will be east side vs. west side, when Bowlway Lanes take on Elgin Lanes. The first three matches will be on Saturday, March 1 at Elgin Lanes, 402 Shepard Drive, starting at 1pm. The final three matches will be held on Saturday, March 8 at Bowlway Lanes, 810 Villa Street, starting at 1 p.m. The team that wins the most match game points during the two week competition will win the Mayor’s Cup, personally presented by Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain.
The event is free and open to the public. It’s sponsored by Bowlway Lanes, Elgin Lanes, Miller Lite, madwill creative, City of Elgin, Bault Bowling, Jason Pawlowski, Jeff Myers, Anderson’s Trophies, and certification is provided by the United States Bowling Congress.
